The Van Meter Visitor: The Winged Thing That Terrorized an Iowa Town

Imagine walking through a quiet Iowa town in 1903.

There are no streetlights flooding the night. No smartphones. No airplanes overhead. After dark, the world beyond the glow of a lamp becomes very dark, very quickly.

Then something appears above the rooftops.

It has enormous wings.

It moves with frightening speed.

And according to the people who claimed to see it, a brilliant light shines from its head.

For several nights in the fall of 1903, residents of Van Meter, Iowa, reported encounters with something they couldn't identify. Contemporary newspaper coverage recorded accounts from prominent townspeople, and more than 120 years later, the strange visitor has never received a universally accepted explanation.

Today we know it as theVan Meter Visitor.

SOMETHING ABOVE THE BUILDINGS

The story begins in late September 1903.

One of the earliest witnesses was local businessman U.G. Griffith. According to accounts preserved from the period, Griffith encountered an enormous dark figure around the buildings of Van Meter late at night.

Whatever he thought he was looking at, it didn't resemble an ordinary Iowa animal.

The creature was described as possessing enormous bat-like wings and a strange horn or projection on its forehead. Stranger still, witnesses claimed that projection produced an intensely bright light.

Griffith wasn't the only person who reported seeing it.

During the following nights, other residents—including people identified in accounts as a physician, banker or bank employee, and local businessmen—reported their own encounters with a similar winged figure.

Contemporary Iowa newspapers were reporting the story within days.

That distinction matters.

It doesn't prove a monster existed.

But the Van Meter Visitor isn't simply a legend invented generations later. We have evidence that people in Iowa were actually telling this bizarre story in1903.

THEN THEY STARTED SHOOTING AT IT

As sightings continued, fear apparently gave way to something else.

The townspeople armed themselves.

Several accounts describe witnesses firing guns at the creature, apparently without noticeable effect. The Visitor would simply escape into the darkness.

Descriptions varied somewhat—as eyewitness descriptions usually do—but several features became associated with the creature:

It was large.

It possessed enormous wings.

It produced an unpleasant odor.

And most bizarrely, it appeared capable of projecting an intense light from its head.

Some reports also described large three-toed tracks.

Then the story became even stranger.

The townspeople began to suspect they knew where the Visitor was coming from.

THE ABANDONED MINE

Near Van Meter was an abandoned coal mine.

Residents reportedly followed the creature toward it, and on the final night of the episode, a group of armed men gathered near the mine.

According to the story preserved in contemporary reporting, something emerged.

Then something else appeared with it.

There weren't one buttwo Visitors.

The men opened fire.

The creatures reportedly retreated into the mine.

And then…

Nothing.

The extraordinary series of sightings that had frightened Van Meter simply stopped.

No creature was captured.

No body was recovered.

No photograph exists.

And there is no surviving specimen that can tell us what the people of Van Meter encountered.

SO WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?

This is where we have to separate the wonderfully creepy legend from what the evidence can actually support.

DOCUMENTED:Multiple residents reported seeing something unusual, their accounts appeared in newspapers at the time, and the story was circulating in 1903 rather than being invented decades afterward.

REPORTED BUT UNPROVEN:The glowing horn, enormous wings, strange tracks, resistance to gunfire, foul smell and creatures entering the mine all come from eyewitness and newspaper accounts. There is no surviving physical evidence proving these details represented an unknown animal.

FOLKLORE AND LATER SPECULATION:Theories have since ranged from an undiscovered flying animal to a surviving prehistoric creature, extraterrestrial visitor or something supernatural. None has been demonstrated.

There is also a much less exotic possibility.

People could have encountered an unusual bird or other animal under terrible viewing conditions. Once several frightening reports circulated around a small community, expectation and fear could have influenced subsequent sightings.

Sensational newspaper reporting may have helped the story grow as well.

But even that explanation leaves an interesting question.

What started it?

A MONSTER WITH A SEARCHLIGHT

There are plenty of stories about mysterious winged creatures.

Mothman reportedly had glowing red eyes.

The Jersey Devil was described as a bizarre flying animal.

But the Van Meter Visitor has one detail that makes it wonderfully difficult to forget:

The light.

A gigantic winged creature with something resembling a searchlight shining from its forehead sounds almost too strange even for cryptid folklore.

And remember the year.

1903.

The Wright brothers wouldn't make their famous powered flight at Kitty Hawk until December—several months after the reported Van Meter encounters.

People weren't accustomed to seeing machines flying through the night sky.

A powerful moving light above the rooftops of a small Iowa town would have been profoundly strange.

Perhaps the residents encountered an animal they couldn't identify.

Perhaps fear transformed something ordinary into something extraordinary.

Perhaps the newspapers turned several unrelated incidents into one fantastic monster story.

Or perhaps something genuinely unusual visited Van Meter for a few nights in 1903.

Whatever happened, something remarkable survived.

The story.

More than a century later, people are still asking the same question those Iowa residents were asking as they stared into the darkness:
