On a hot August night in 1955, a family in rural Kentucky loaded their children into two cars and fled their farmhouse.

They weren't running from a fire.

They weren't running from an intruder.

They claimed they were running from something that wasn't human.

What followed would become one of the strangest encounters in American UFO history—a story involving a mysterious light in the sky, small glowing creatures, gunfire, terrified witnesses and a farmhouse that, according to those inside, was under siege for hours.

A Light Falls From the Sky

It was Sunday evening, August 21, 1955, near the tiny community of Kelly, a few miles north of Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

Members of the Sutton family and their friends were gathered at a rural farmhouse when Billy Ray Taylor stepped outside.

At approximately 7:00 p.m., Taylor reported seeing a brilliant object streak through the sky and descend somewhere beyond the farmhouse.

He rushed inside and told the others that he had seen what looked like a flying saucer.

They apparently weren't particularly impressed.

At least not yet.

Roughly an hour later, the family's dog began barking.

Taylor and Elmer "Lucky" Sutton went outside to investigate.

That's when the night changed.

Something Was Coming Toward the House

According to witness accounts, a strange figure emerged from the darkness.

It was small—roughly three feet tall—with an oversized head, enormous glowing eyes, unusually long arms and large pointed ears.

Its arms were raised as it approached.

Taylor and Sutton grabbed their guns.

They fired.

The men later claimed the creature was struck but instead of collapsing, it tumbled or floated away into the darkness.

Then another appeared.

And another.

Figures reportedly appeared outside windows, near doorways and in the trees surrounding the farmhouse.

At one point, Taylor stepped beneath an overhang and reportedly had a claw-like hand reach down toward his head from above.

The people inside began firing whenever one of the creatures appeared.

But according to their story, shooting them didn't seem to work.

The strange visitors simply disappeared into the darkness—and eventually came back.

The Family Finally Ran

After hours of fear and gunfire, the occupants decided they had had enough.

They piled into their vehicles and raced toward Hopkinsville.

Their destination wasn't a neighbor's house.

It was the police station.

A group of adults and children arrived late that evening claiming that strange little beings had surrounded their home.

Whatever police thought of the story, the witnesses appeared frightened enough that authorities took it seriously.

Law enforcement officers traveled back to the property to investigate.

They found evidence that plenty of shooting had occurred.

What they didn't find was a creature.

There were no bodies.

No strange footprints.

No alien spacecraft sitting in the field.

And officers searching the property did not encounter the beings described by the family.

Eventually, police left.

But according to the witnesses, the night wasn't over.

They Came Back

After authorities departed, members of the family claimed the creatures returned.

One reportedly appeared outside a bedroom window.

More shots were fired.

The strange activity allegedly continued intermittently until the early morning hours.

Then, as daylight approached, it stopped.

The creatures were never seen there again.

But the story spread quickly.

Before long, the bizarre visitors became popularly known as theHopkinsville GoblinsorKelly Green Men.

So What Were They?

There is no shortage of theories.

The most obvious is exactly what the witnesses believed they had encountered:

Visitors from somewhere else.

Taylor's sighting of a luminous object descending toward the property before the creatures appeared certainly helped cement the incident's place in UFO history.

But skeptics have proposed a much more terrestrial suspect.

Owls.

Great horned owls have large reflective eyes, prominent feather tufts that can resemble pointed ears and surprisingly humanoid silhouettes when seen under poor lighting conditions.

An owl perched on a branch can look extremely strange—especially at night.

Add fear, darkness and gunfire, and skeptics argue that ordinary animals could have become something much more terrifying in the minds of the witnesses.

Others have suggested meteors may explain the original light in the sky.

But that explanation has its own problem.

The witnesses weren't describing a fleeting glimpse of one strange animal.

They described repeated encounters lasting for hours.

Multiple people claimed to see the creatures.

And whatever happened frightened the group enough that they abandoned the farmhouse and went directly to police.

That doesn't prove they saw extraterrestrials.

But it does make the story harder to dismiss as nothing more than a tale invented around a kitchen table.

Something Happened at Kelly

This is what makes the Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter so fascinating.

Strip away the decades of embellishment, illustrations and pop-culture mythology and you're left with something surprisingly simple:

A group of people became genuinely terrified one summer night in Kentucky.

They believed something strange was outside their home.

They fired weapons at it.

Eventually, they became frightened enough to flee and ask the police for help.

What those people actually encountered is another question entirely.

Aliens?

Owls?

A meteor followed by a night of escalating fear and mistaken identity?

Or something we still don't have a good explanation for?

Whatever happened outside that farmhouse on August 21, 1955, the witnesses carried the story into history.

And somewhere between the dark Kentucky fields and the windows of that little farmhouse, the Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter became a legend.
